○ Poinsettia – The poinsettia (/pɔɪnˈsɛtiə/ or /pɔɪnˈsɛtə/)(Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a commercially important plant species of the diverse spurge family. The species is indigenous to Mexico. It is particularly well known for its red and green foliage and is widely used in Christmas floral displays. It derives its common English name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the US in 1825.

○ Euphorbia pulcherrima– Julstjärna (Euphorbia pulcherrima) är en art i familjen törelväxter och förekommer naturligt i Mexico. Den kallas ibland felaktigt julros.
– Julstjärnan är en populär krukväxt i Europa, särskilt vid jul. Den förekommer även i Nordamerika. I vilt tillstånd är julstjärnan en buske som kan bli flera meter hög. Genom förädling har man fått fram låga sorter som passar som krukväxter.
– Dess vetenskapliga artnamn pulcherrima betyder „mycket vacker“ eller „vackrast“.
Historia – Enligt aztekernas tro fick den sin karaktäristiska röda färg när en gudinnas blod droppade ner på dess blad. I slutet av 1820-talet introducerade Joel Roberts Poinsett växten till USA och därifrån kom den senare till Europa. Ett annat namn på växten i USA är också „poinsettia“.

  1. They are very popular here too at Christmas, Elke. I think they are grown in huge numbers around Christmas in some part of the world where they flourish and then they get shipped world-wide! 🙂

      The life of a poinsettia begins with a tiny sapling of five to six centimeters picked from a mother plant in Africa. It then fly to Europe Or other countries, where it is rooted.   3. Ja, populær er den! Det var faktisk en norsk gartner i nærheten av der jeg bor som foredlet den forgrenede sorten vi bruker i dag: Thormod Hegg i Lier på 60-tallet. Den første sorten kalte han opp etter barnebarnet sitt, ‚Annette Hegg‘.
